Sherita Renee' Smallwood, born in Franklin, Virginia, on Tuesday, January 16th, 1990, to Shirley Smallwood Lynch and Larry Donell Cotton Sr., quietly entered eternal rest on Thursday, January 25th, 2024 in Richmond, Virginia. As the eldest among her siblings, Sherita leaves behind a legacy of love, warmth, and cherished memories.
Sherita received her education in the Hertford County Public Schools of North Carolina and early in life embraced Christian fellowship at Nebo Baptist Church in Murfreesboro, North Carolina, under the guidance of Pastor Robert L. Holloman. Later, she made Richmond, Virginia, her home and found employment with Citi Trends.
Known for her loving smile and a heart brimming with affection, Sherita had a special place in her heart for family gatherings, especially when baked macaroni and cheese was on the table. Her love for her children, Ja’Niya and Za’Marion, was immeasurable, and she radiated joy with her infectious smile, despite being a person of few words.
Sherita is preceded in death by her grandmother, Louise Smallwood; grandfathers William Samuel Brayboy and Robert Lee; great-grandmothers Laura Smallwood Pierce and Pauline Cotton; uncle, Reginald Edwards and aunt, Keisha Cotton.
She leaves behind a cherished legacy and is survived her daughter, Ja’Niya Smallwood; her son, Za’Marion Smallwood; her mother, Shirley S. Lynch (Marty Lynch), father Larry D. Cotton Sr., foster parents, Ellis and Bobbie Speller, four sisters, RaIsha Butts, Kiera Cotton, Tomieka Cotton, Daja Gatling—and four brothers, Dalton Pierce, DeAngelo Smallwood, Larry Cotton Jr. and Rondell Cotton.
Additionally to cherish her memories are her grandmother, Maxine Cotton; five aunts, Laura Zolllicoffer, Laverne C. Perry, Sharita Cotton, LaToya Cotton and ShaRhonda Cary; five uncles, Samuel Smallwood (Patrice), Avery Newsome, William L. Newsome, Deon Newsome and Eric Newsome. A very special friend, Jermaine Best, and a host of nieces, nephews, great-aunts, great-uncles, cousins, and friends also mourn her passing.
Sherita's memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her, and her impact on their lives will be a source of comfort in the days ahead.
