On July 15, 1951, our beloved Ernell “Nell” Wilkins-Hill was born in Brooklyn, New York, to the late Albert and Arletha Wilkins. Raised as the eldest of eight children, she embraced her role with strength, grace, and unconditional love throughout her life.
Ernell was educated in the New York City Public School System and graduated from Fashion High School, where her God-given creative gifts flourished. An exemplary seamstress, she took pride in her craftsmanship, creating beautiful garments, heartfelt crafts, and delicious treats for those she loved. In 1980, Ernell was blessed with her daughter, Shari, who remained her pride and joy throughout her life. In 1998, she married her best friend and the love of her life, Sandy “Leander” Hill, with whom she shared twenty-seven wonderful years of marriage. Together, they made their home in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, raising a loving family of five children: Shari, Sandy, Yolanda, Lamont, and Raegan. Affectionately known as “Nell,” she embraced her roles as wife and homemaker with unwavering love, compassion, and dedication.
She devoted many years of faithful service to the Admitting Department at Brooklyn Hospital, where her warm spirit and vibrant personality brought comfort and reassurance to all she encountered. Ernell possessed a true servant’s heart and had a remarkable way of making others feel seen, cared for, and at ease.
During her years in North Carolina, Nell held multiple positions, including receptionist at Nash General Hospital. She later joined the Weldon City School System, serving first as a receptionist in the main office and later as a child nutritionist, a position she held until her retirement. Her kindness and dedication left a lasting impact on countless students, families, and colleagues. She was also a faithful member of Jerusalem Baptist Church, singing in the choir and working with the youth ministry for many years. After twenty-one years in Roanoke Rapids, Nell and her husband began a new chapter in Skippers, Virginia, where they lived for the past six years. During this time, her creativity flourished as she developed her own style of arts and crafts and baking.
For several years, Ernell also worked with the nonprofit organization Transforming Lives and Restoring Hope Inc., providing clothing for individuals seeking employment. She was an active member and later President of the Chaloner Senior Citizens Club, helping organize activities, outings, and trips that brought joy and fellowship to its members. She found great pleasure in community and connection. Among her greatest passions were planting fresh vegetables and flowers, canning her harvest, and landscaping—activities that brought her peace and fulfillment. Above all, her greatest earthly joy was being a grandmother. She cherished her beloved grandson, Michael, along with eight additional grandchildren, whom she loved deeply and unconditionally.
Ernell was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Arletha Wilkins, and her beloved brothers, Keith and Brian. She leaves to cherish her loving memory her devoted husband, Sandy “Leander” Hill; her children, Shari, Sandy, Yolanda, Lamont, and Raegan; her grandson Michael; eight additional grandchildren; her siblings Albert (Sharon), Don (Nandy), Eric, Tracy (Armed), and Tommy (Tressa); and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
