And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ,
after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and
make you strong, firm and steadfast.
~ I Peter 5: 10
LEON MCCOY EDWARDS departed this earthly life to receive his eternal rest on Friday, December 26th, 2025, while in the care of the North Carolina State Veterans Home in Kernersville, North Carolina. Leon was born on Friday, May 21st, 1948, in Northampton County to the late Margaret Lee Jordan and Sir Walter Majette.
Leon accepted Christ early in life and was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Severn. He graduated from Northampton County Public Schools. In January 1968, Leon was drafted into the United States Army, where he proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. Throughout his military service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. After his courageous service, Leon received an honorable discharge.
Following his military career, Leon worked as a Correctional Officer with the North Carolina Department of Corrections. In addition, he farmed thousands of acres of land throughout Northampton and Hertford Counties. Leon embraced a life rooted in hard work, perseverance, and dedication.
Affectionately known as “Super Chicken,” Leon was always full of life. He enjoyed fast cars and motorcycles, spending time with family and friends, and was an avid bingo and checker player.
Leon was preceded in death by his parents and by one of his sons, Michael D. Edwards, who was forever held in his heart.
He leaves to cherish his memories two sons, Darius and Terry (Tia) Edwards; two daughters, Leeshanon and Sherette Edwards; seven grandchildren, Elijah, Anaya, Isaiah, Taylor Edwards, Zara and Kyrie Frederick, and Jalissa (Joe) Patterson; and four great-grandchildren, Amina, Joe, Amiya, and Joel Patterson.
Leon also leaves behind two siblings, Jeffrey (Ann) Jordan and Linda Turner; two cousins who were like brothers, Arthur (Connie) Davenport and Larry (Laverne) Edwards; an uncle, Johnnie Lee Sharpe; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
Though he will be deeply missed, Leon’s legacy will continue to live on in the lives of all who knew and loved him.
The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of
strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labor and
sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away."
~Psalm 90:10
