Mother Clarine 'Pogal' Pugh Obituary

“All my life YOU have been faithful. All my life YOU have

been so, so good. With every breath that I am able,

I will sing of the goodness of God.”

Today, we pause with grateful hearts to celebrate the life, love, and enduring legacy of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Clarine Anderson Pugh, affectionately known as “Pogal.” Clarine was a woman who loved her family deeply and wholeheartedly. She not only nurtured those closest to her, but her kindness, wisdom, and compassion enriched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her.

On Tuesday, September 30th, 1947, in Seaboard, North Carolina, Henry Deloatch and Virgie Deloatch Anderson welcomed the arrival of their beautiful baby girl, Clarine. She received her education in the public schools of Northampton County and graduated from Gumberry High School in Gumberry, North Carolina. Determined and no stranger to hard work, Clarine furthered her education at Roanoke-Chowan Community College in Ahoskie, North Carolina, where she earned her certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant.

Throughout her working years, Clarine demonstrated a strong work ethic and unwavering dedication. She was employed at Mylcraft Sewing Factory in Rich Square, served as a custodian at the local bank, and later provided compassionate care as a nursing assistant at Hampton Woods Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Jackson, North Carolina.

A woman of steadfast faith, Clarine accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior at a young age and joined Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Jackson, North Carolina. As her life journey continued, she united in Christian fellowship with Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Seaboard, North Carolina, where she served faithfully in many capacities and was lovingly honored as the Mother of the Church.

On Monday, May 5th, 1969, Clarine was united in Holy Matrimony to the love of her life, James Wilkin Pugh. Together, they shared 57 years of marital bliss, built on love, respect, and unwavering devotion. Scripture asks, “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies” (Proverbs 31:10). Clarine embodied the essence of that virtuous woman through her fear of God, tireless work ethic, deep respect for her husband, foresight, encouragement, compassion for others, concern for the poor, and unconditional love for her family. She was the matriarch of the Pugh family, respected and cherished, and the values she instilled will forever remain in the hearts of all she touched. Although quiet in nature, she was quick to tell you exactly what she was thinking.  

Prior to her declining health, Clarine found great joy in fishing. In later years, she delighted in solving word-search puzzles and watching her favorite soap operas. In addition, she enjoyed cooking and was known for a delicious cabbage, collard greens and chicken pot pie.

“When peace like a river attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll; Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul.” On Monday, January 26th, 2026, while under the care of ECU Medical Center in Greenville, North Carolina, Clarine peacefully answered God’s call, recalling the refrain, “It is well, it is well with my soul,” and crossed the great divide from labor to reward. Her seeds were well sown, her earthly service complete, and she now rejoices in the victory and triumph of eternal life.

In addition to her parents, Clarine was preceded in death by her siblings: William Henry Anderson, Johnnie Anderson, Leroy Anderson, Verdell Walden, Rufus Earl Anderson, Vernon Lee Anderson, Evangeline Anderson, Henry Deloatch, Jr., and Catherine Powell.

Though clouds may linger now, we take comfort in knowing that a brighter day awaits. In that land called Heaven, God shall wipe all tears away. As we lovingly commit her to God’s eternal care, Clarine leaves to cherish her memory: her devoted husband, James Wilkin Pugh of the home; four children—Valerie Boone (Rev. Carl Boone) of Seaboard, North Carolina; Gregory Pugh (Cynthia) of Raleigh, North Carolina; Pamela Williams (Tyrone) of Jackson, North Carolina; and Catina Pugh (Edward) of Petersburg, Virginia; her siblings—Raymond Anderson (Renee), Shirley Greene (Robert), John Anderson, and Mary Jane Anderson; grandchildren—Anthony Pugh (Kora), Jermaine Deloatch (Keyonna), Dewayne Deloatch (Renell), Shawn Pugh (Rebecca), Niya Jasper Pugh, Latrell Pugh, and Jaden Williams; great-grandchildren— Chrisette Pugh, Calleigh Pugh, Ke’Marion Deloatch, Dewayne Deloatch Jr., Ahmir Deloatch, Kaleb Pugh, Isiah Pugh, Aiyden Deloatch, Christian Deloatch, Jayceon Pugh, and Amiyah Deloatch; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends.

 

Relatives and friends are warmly invited to visit Mother Pugh's tribute wall,

where they may share cherished memories, offer words of comfort,

and arrange floral tributes as a meaningful expression of sympathy to the family.
