“All my life YOU have been faithful. All my life YOU have been so, so good.
With every breath that I am able, I will sing of the goodness of God.”
Verna Harriet Ward, affectionately known as “Butch,” was born on October 17th, 1954, in Northampton County, North Carolina, to the late William Roscoe Ward and Cudolia Wall Ward. At an early age, she joined Branches Chapel Baptist Church of Rich Square, North Carolina, where she faithfully served as an usher and was an active member of the Pastor Aide Club and Prayer Ministry. Verna received her early education in Northampton County and graduated from W.S. Creecy School in 1973. She furthered her education at Roanoke-Chowan College, where she completed her studies in cosmetology.
On Tuesday, December 23rd, 2025, Verna quietly transitioned to her Heavenly Home while under the care of ECU Health Roanoke Hospital in Ahoskie, North Carolina. She was united in marriage to the late Ernest “Skin” Edward Ward, who preceded her in death. Verna was a devoted wife, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Dorothy, Doris, and Emma Jean, and her brothers, Roscoe Ward Jr., Harvey Ward Sr., Rudolph Ward, and Earl Ward. Known for her generous spirit, Verna was a giver by nature and found great joy in making baskets for the elderly, the sick, and anyone in need.
Verna was employed briefly with Daber Manufacturing, the Children’s Home in Oxford, North Carolina, and later worked for many years at Perdue Farms until her retirement. She leaves to cherish her loving memory her sisters, Joyce McClendon (Jesse) of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, and Agnes Brown (Curtis, Sr.) of Kelford, North Carolina; a special cousin, Sarah Pickett (James); her sisters-in-law, Vernice Ward, Minnie Ann Ward, and Judith Ward; her goddaughter, Dr. Sheba Churchill (David); her very special friend, Zelma Williams (Rev. Johnny Williams); and a host of nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. She also leaves a special great-great-nephew, Little Jesiah Parker, whom she absolutely adored, along with many cousins and friends.
